Day 10: Skala to Volušnica Loop to Vusanje
Day 10: Skala to Volušnica Loop to Vusanje
Tuesday 4 August 2026, 10.9km, 1000m elevation gain.
Bungalows Prokletije to Guest House Kollata
Volusnica Loop Hike, Prokletije National Park, Montenegro
As breakfast was not provided by our accommodation, we enjoyed a more familiar meal of muesli and tea/coffee before heading up the trail, using groceries we bought from a small supermarket.

According to the map, this track leads up to a loop and then returns the same way. The ascent initially was through the shade of beech forest then we turned left commencing the loop track. This again wound steeply uphill, then left the tree cover and we climbed to the top of a high rocky peak with the most incredible views across to nearby sheer rock walls with small remnants of snow that presumably remain frozen all summer.

The day was once again fine with a cloudless sky and the temperature reaching 30 degrees. Fortunately most of the trail remained at a high enough elevation that the air held a slight chill.

After summiting the first peak, we descended steeply then followed a ridgeline undulating and reaching a number of hilltops before the long steep descent back to the carport below.

On the way down we passed a number of families, often with young children, some racing up the steep climbs, others struggling who we thought might have to cut their hikes short. This day was probably the most spectacular one for views. It wasn’t part of the Peaks of the Balkans circuit, but a great find by Rob who organised and planned the side-trip for us all.
After lunch (pizza), we took taxis back to Vusanje where we relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner was grilled trout! Tomorrow is the last section of Peaks of the Balkans Trail, and takes us back to Theth, our starting point.
