Kulla Guest House to Mirsads Mountain Cottage

With only a shorter hike before us, there was no hurry to get moving in the morning. The sky promised another sunny day and most of the group were feeling well and energetic, ready for the day’s ascent. We bid goodbye to our hosts and set off with our packed lunches – sandwiches we had made up at the breakfast table.

The steady climb was mostly through pine forest, the dirt path churned by cattle in places. Thankfully, the last few days have been warm and dry so the muddy patches were few and small. It was lovely walking in the shade and, when we moved into clearings at the hilltop, we were treated again with beautiful views of adjacent mountains and the valleys stretching below.

Although we have seen plenty of cows, horses, sheep and chickens, so far the only wildlife we have seen are a couple of small snakes and some birds. We have heard that there are ibex, brown bears, wolves and lynx but they remain elusive. Along the trail this afternoon we feasted on wild blueberries and very tasty wild strawberries.

We were at Babino Polje by 2.30 pm and sat on the balcony of our homestay nibbling on crackers and enjoying refreshing cold drinks. Later we had a delicious home cooked dinner, including freshly made byrek (filo pastry-like tubes with potato filling, cooked in a giant coil). The evenings are spent playing cards and doing quizzes together or reading and relaxing.
