Leaving Basque country

June 24, 2024 2 Comments

Day 10, Jun 23, 2024
From Sainte-EngrĂ¢ce to Cabane du Cap de la Baitch
22.3 km hiked, 20.8% complete

The morning dawned overcast with light rain. Unfortunately during the night water got into our tent floor so things were a bit damp.

Today’s hike saw us climbing up the road from the auberge where we camped, to a timber logging road that cut across to the GR10. Then it was a long uphill to a Col on the border of Spain. We made good time but there were no views.

Down the track a bit we got to a Refugio and enjoyed a rest, an omelette and a hot drink. We also met up with some hikers that we had met before.

Then it was more climbing to a mist shrouded but spectacular pass with a tricky ascent, the highest elevation we have been yet. The landscape is limestone karst now that we have left the Basque country and are entering the high Pyrenees.

We finished the day camped in a spectacular cirque.

Time for some flower photos

Here comes the sun

Hi Ros, Rob and Pete, you are all so inspiring!!

We are really enjoying and marvelling in your hike experience.
The photos are spectacular and give a good sense of the beauty and harshness of the landscape.

    Keep it up đŸ™‚

    Love Catherine and Martin xxx

Wow. That looks real steep. It must be to have ropes there to assist you.
