Back to Lordsburg

‘Red line’ mile marker 77.2 to 83.4
Hiked today: 6.2 miles / 10.0 km
Hiked so far: 84.4 miles / 135.8 km (approx: 2.7%)

Today we had just a short 6 mile hike into town. Walking along an easy path in the cool morning was really lovely and we arrived back at the motel at 8.45 in good spirits. Since check-in was not til 1 pm, we relaxed at a McDonalds restaurant and had interesting conversations with a couple of other travellers. Later, back at the Econolodge, we met Heatshield, Russell, and some other hikers.
Heatshield told us the story behind his trail name. A few days ago as he was hiking the first section in the very hot desert, he met another hiker who looked to be very unwell. This young man was severely dehydrated and vomiting, unable to keep even small amounts of fluid down. Heat shield was able to assist him by cooling his chest with water, and staying 2 hours with him to check he was OK. The young man made it safely to the next town in a ride up the highway which fortunately intersected the trail nearby. Hence our friend’s trail name.
Our town chores – eating town food, sorting our resupply, showering, cleaning utensils, and doing laundry – are all complete, and we will head off around 6 am to start the next section.

Love those cacti (shades of Tucson !)
Just reminding you, you’ve done 2.7% …. if it seems to be going a bit slow.
Mighty effort!
Wow, 20+ mile days right off the bat. That must feel real good. Great photos. Yes, that one particular photo reminded me of the PCT (even before I read the caption). Hopefully you don’t run into any jumping cactus.
Good job guys! And good on your new friend, he probably saved that guy’s life. Will you guys get new trail names for this hike or is it a one name per person system?
Heat shield probably saved that young man’s life! Thank God he was there to help him.
Glad to see you eating some pizza.
We are sticking to the same names. Most people seem to. Hikers often know other hikers by their name on previous through hikes.
