Jacob’s Ladder

April 10, 2022 Uncategorized 4 Comments

Day 13: April 10, 2022
AT mile 136.9 to 156.0
Hiked: 19.4 miles / 31.2 km
AT miles hiked to date: 7.1%

After an early rise and a quick brekky we left NOC with clear skies and hardly any wind. There were a few bright crimson cardinals fluttering around the buildings as we passed. We soon warmed up as the trail took us on a long ascent into the mountains.  We were treated with a pretty snowy landscape and enjoyed crunching through the freshly fallen snow.

Uphill was hard going but the steep downhill bits on ice, snow and mud were quite slippery so even slower going.

Not long after lunch we came to a road crossing and were treated with a hearty bean and chicken soup provided by the friend of one of the other thru hikers.

By the afternoon we were walking on dry ground again but we had a very steep climb up from the road junction. Because of the incline it is called Jacob’s Ladder. It didn’t lead to the heavens but we did meet a friendly local couple near the top and chatting to them gave us a chance to get our breath back. Then on from there we were ridge walking from peak to peak and then along a track around the hillsides to where we are now camped.

I’m glad you were able to camp without any snow. Crazy spring weather. We got a little snow here last night. My friend Jeff got a foot of snow at his cabin last night. Stay warm.

I’m amazed by that tent. Have you tested it yet in strong winds?

We haven’t had any real strong winds at night yet on the AT. We had the same tent on the PCT and it worked fine in some pretty strong winds.
