Day 3: Blood Mountain

March 31, 2022
AT mile 17.0 to 32.4
Hiked: 15.4 miles / 24.8 km
AT miles hiked to date: 32.4

The rain came last night, as promised, first just spitting along with wind high in the trees, then progressing to a prolonged heavy downpour. Sleep was very patchy again but enough to be able to get moving a bit earlier. We started hiking in mist and cool breezes and unfortunately sumitted a couple of peaks with only clouds as view. A highlight today was seeing a small tortoise moving slowly along the track. Apart from birds and a couple of squirrels, that is all the wildlife we have actually seen. We did, however, pass some bear scat along the trail and we have special bearproof bags for storing our food overnight.

We have met some interesting people – some thru-hiking like us and others just out for day or multi day section hikes.

View from Blood Mountain

Blood Mountain was our main ascent today and the weather had cleared beautifully for us to take in the view from the top. There is an old historic hikers hut at the summit which has stood the test of time well.

Moss is back!

Down from Blood Mountain the trail took us to Neels Gap where there is an outfitter store and we have bought more supplies for the next 3 days. As well as camping gear they sell heated up frozen pizza so that was a treat for dinner. We are camped a mile further on and have enough sunlight to hopefully dry out some damp gear before bed.

Day 2: our longest day yet

Day 4: Thanks Stargazer!

Shame you weren’t in the old hut during the very wet night!

Nice to see good ‘ol Moss! I’ve missed him! Compass looks great! Good mileage on day 3 after a wet night.
