Welcome to the blog of our 2026 hike of Te Araroa – South Island.

The Te Araroa (“the long pathway”) is a 3000km hike from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. Our goal is to hike half (the South Island) of the approx. 3000 km of the trail in January and February 2026. This is the solid red line shown above, starting at Ship Cove at the top of the South Island and finishing at Bluff. Hopefully we can come back again later and finish the North Island!

We will try to post regularly while we are on the trail but please be patient as we may not always have a good (or any) internet connection.

We really appreciate your encouraging comments but may not be able to respond to every one of them. At the moment, to cut down on spam, we will moderate initial comments. Once your first comment is accepted, future comments by you will be automatically accepted (if you use the same email address when making the comment).
