Day 26, Lake Tekapo
January 25, 2026
Peel Forest to Lake Tekapo to near Lake Tekapo
TA km marker 2443.5 to 2428.6
Hiked today: 14.9 km
After breakfast, Steve drove us back to Geraldine, and we caught the onwards bus to Lake Tekapo. We had sent a message to a what sapp TA group explaining our plan and Sara (from Hobart) decided to join us. We met her on the bus and enjoyed her company. She is still troubled by her swollen ankle but has been able to hike without pain.

After lunching on burgers, we hiked 15 km along a path and then a dirt road around the lake. Lake Tekapo is a beautiful turquoise colour due to the glacial waters and the water level is high because of the summer ice melt. Apparently the levels are much lower in winter.

It took us about 3 1/2 hours, and we arrived at the place where the road turns away from the shore. There is a flat spot big enough for both tents and we are enjoying a cup of tea as the first drops of rain spatter on the tent.

Lovely Lake Tekapo – just wish you had seen it on a sunny day!
Those birds look like Canadian geese. 😋
Correct!
