Day 5, Zero at Havelock

With all the opportunity of a good sleep in, we nevertheless woke early and were up around 7.30, eating brekkie at a cafe soon after 8. Because we had changed our caravan park booking, we were advised that we would have to move to a different cabin today.

We dutifully packed up and are now in the self contained unit that we had originally booked. Yesterday we were using shared bathroom facilities but today we have our own bathroom and a microwave. With plenty of free time, we had a look at the Havelock museum and the local art gallery that was a treasure trove of beautiful artworks.
After assessing the contents of the resupply package we had sent ahead, and making a shopping list, we headed back out to the 4 Square grocery store to purchase the rest of the supplies we will need. The Richmond Range is a long and difficult section with river crossings that might cause unplanned delays while we wait for water levels to drop to a passable level. We might get through in 8 days, but are allowing for an extra day in case of a weather related stop.

Our food bags are full to bursting, and we need to carry enough water for tomorrow’s long road walk. The plan is to have an early brekkie at a cafe, where we can also purchase sandwiches for lunch, then head off on the road to Pelorus Bridge. It is another 22km walk with, hopefully, a stream after 10 km where we can top up our water.
