Day 164: We made it!
Today (Oct 1st) we touched the PCT marker where the trail crosses Highway 44 near Old Station in central California. This means we have an unbroken set of footsteps from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. Almost all of the footsteps have been on the ups and downs of the Pacific Crest Trail, except for three short alternate routes that we chose because they were more scenic or were due to a trail closure.
It would have been nice to walk continuously from Mexico to Canada but we are more than happy to have covered the whole trail in different sections (due to weather) even though our finish point was the inauspicious one horse town of Old Station.
So we have achieved our goal to through hike the PCT in one season (164 days to be exact). Many thanks to all of you who wrote encouraging comments on this blog. And a special thanks to my terrific wife who has put up with so much and put in a tremendous effort, including coping with a sore shoulder.
We thank God for many blessings, including:
- The opportunity to do a great adventure together
- No significant injuries or sickness
- No wild animal incidents
- Predominantly great weather, especially little rain in Washington
- Teaming up with OG and benefitting from his company and help in logistics (thanks also to his wife Jean)
- Being able to complete within our 6 month visa and despite an unusually high and late snow year
- Meeting many great people and experiencing many acts of kindness.
- Seeing a huge variety of magnificent natural beauty
- No detours for fires
- Safety in snow and crossing rivers
- No lightning storms in the Sierras
Our final day was 27.6 miles / 43.5 km. We started in the dark at 6:30 and spent most of the morning walig on snow. But the day was perfect for hiking, cool with sunny blue skies.
Crossing this icy river on a slippery log was a challenge
Mt Lassen
When we arrived at Old Station, OG’s wife was there to meet us. We then drove to a motel in Redding. Tomorrow we will say goodbye to them and rent a car. Our plan is to rent a cottage on the coast and do… nothing! Well, no walking, and try to gain back some of the weight we have lost.
Congratulations Rob & Ros!!! I’ve been following your journey since our brief meeting at the very beginning on of your travels in Warner Springs, CA …you guys were about 7 days into your journey when we met on the trail from Eagle Rock. It’s been enjoyable reading about your adventures and seeing all the beautiful pictures of your life on the trail these past few months. If memory serves you were expecting to complete the entire trail by the end of October so a bigger CONGRATULATIONS for the early completion. What an amazing accomplishment and a wonderful adventure to share together. Thanks for sharing your blog with me and for allowing me to peek in on your travels from time to time of the PCT!
Thanks Heidi. Glad you enjoyed the blog. It was a great trip, but now we have to go back to work 🙁
Wahoooo!!! great adventure!!
Top effort both of ya! I knew you would take care of it
Congratulations on achieving what most of us could never dream of. The photos were lovely and we have enjoyed following much of your trek. All the best for recuperating for a few days.
Love, Geoff and Scott
To paraphrase John Muir, you walked the trail, climbed the mountains and got their good tidings. Congratulations Rob and Ros on realising and sharing your exceptional and majestic endeavour with us.
Congratulations and safe travels back home as you leave the snow and head towards sunny days.
Glad I was able to meet you and I have really enjoyed your breath taking photos. All the best with Peace, Love, and Happiness
Congratulations to you both!!
Awesome! Congratulations you too, what a huge effort! You won’t know what to do with yourselves now, after your rest that is. Start planning the next one? Spain? I will miss your posts and photos. We look forward to catching up with you both on the GC in November.
Fantastic you guys are amazing , certainly an inspiration to those of us who have travelled vicariously with you
What an accomplishment with so many stories to tell. It was a joy to spend time together in Pioneer. I do hope you will consider a return visit as it felt as if your were family. By then the hot tub will be operational and the patio completed. Roger has been digging a trench for the electrical this week and has a 7 day plan to resurface the inside. Our flash mob was a huge success and very gratifying to bring joy to Mary. She got up and danced with us! Tomorrow one friend is leaving and the other is preparing for an estate sale next weekend. Big changes. Safe travels home and I hope you both spend a day getting massages.
What an achievement. Congratulations. Well done.
Congratulations! What an accomplishment. So glad we got a chance to meet you and spend time with you in Pioneer. Rog & Linda

Congratulations on achieving your goal and in such superb style. Thank you for your dedication in maintaining your daily blog so that we could follow your progress and share in the most amazing experience. Make the most of your rest period and we’ll see you back at the GC in good time. The photo book from this trip should be a beauty although it may take both of you to carry it.
Best wishes.
