Day 4: Dob\u00ebrdol to Gjeravica Peak to Dob\u00ebrdol

(Ros) Six of the Fellowship were feeling up to joining today’s side trip to Kosovo’s highest peak (Gjeravica Peak) at 2656m.  (Rob, Andra and Zoe stayed at the guest house to recuperate). After breakfast we set off up the rocky road and then along trails that criss crossed with goat tracks up to the first saddle. At first the sun seemed unbearably hot, but as we climbed,  the coolness of the mountain air prevailed and the hiking was pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although at times the path was a steep struggle, the countryside was beautiful – verdant pastures dotted with many coloured wild flowers. We looked down on the farm houses and barns and walked past sheep and cows, all looking healthy and well fed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail was not as busy as the first day of hiking but we still passed a number of hikers and a couple of large groups. Over the first saddle, we wound our way along the hillside above a valley dotted with lakes fed by melting snow. We crossed 2 small sections of slushy snow, walking in the footprints of others who had passed this way before us this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the trail ascended once more, gradually at first, then with steeper sections, until we followed a gentle incline below the ridgetop before the final pinch to the peak marked with the Kosovan and Albanian flags. Here there were about 20 other hikers who were enjoying their lunch with the mountaintop outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The descent back to Dob\u00ebrdol was easier and quicker, as it was predominantly downhill. Nevertheless the track seemed considerably longer on the return leg. We were all ready for a shower and a cold drink when we got back to camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
