After a wonderful full breakfast at our B&B in Portland, we drove to Nelson, where we were able to leave our car at the AirBnB flat that we had booked to stay in when we finished the walk. We had decided to do the walk in the recommended anti-clockwise direction, which meant that we would follow the coast around to Portland, then come back to Nelson via the inland forest sections. The map below shows the route and the various campsites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We started at the Visitor Centre near the bridge over the Glenelg River and soon made our way onto the beach of Discovery Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bulk of the walk today was along the beach but fortunately the sand was generally quite firm, and the wind not too strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few kilometres before Lake Monibeong, we left the beach and hiked along a track behind the sand dunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We passed a few shy echidnas along the trail who tried to hide by burrowing in the sand. Lunch was wraps and salad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We arrived at Lake Monibeong Camp in plenty of time to set up camp in a nice grassy area. Each of the GSWW campsites has a two-sided shelter with picnic table. Also a water tank and pit toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
