Mist
Day 6, Jun 19, 2024
From Estérençuby to Chalet Pedro
16 km hiked, 13.6% complete.
So we did decide to walk on through the forecast rain today and set off with cloudy skies and cool moist air. As expected, the road out of town was steep and took us onto another steep dirt road, followed by a long steep dirt track through grassy fields to another col. Since we were enshrouded in cloud, we could see nothing down below, but the fog was marvellously atmospheric.
After a brief stop for lunch (baguettes with local ham and cheese), we completed the ascent to a grassy hilltop, the site of about 15 cromlechs (5000 y o), which are ancient burial mounds encircled by stones. Through the mist, we were able to make out about half a dozen rings of standing stones and were reminded of the Lord of the Rings chapter about the barrow wights.
There was only a little further ascent before the path headed in a downwards direction, and we soon came to the turnoff to our chalet where we would be staying for 2 nights. We chose to do this because heavy rain and storms are forecast for tomorrow. Although we learnt that the restaurant was only open for lunches, our hosts kindly supplied a hearty soup and salad for our dinner. We have no sheets/ towels/ toiletries but can make do with our sleeping bags for bedding and wash cloths for towels. At least we have shelter and the heartening warmth of a fire to cheer us through the day off from walking.

Wow! That’s a big variation in weather. You have to be prepared for anything! X
Even in the mist you have lovely photos. Are you seeing many other hikers on the trail?
How very spectacular your varied weather and spectacular photos of the countryside – have a rest amidst the stormy weather. I look forward to your next installment !!
Cromlechs – quelle histoire ancienne!
