Hot
Day 4, Jun 17, 2024
From Col d’Harietta to St Jean Pied de Port
28.9 km hiked, 10.6% complete

We set off at 7 am, heading up the hill from our campsite to take in the views of the farmland below. The air, previously clear and crisp, was steamy as the sun rose. The temperature quickly increased and was up above 30 degrees for most of the day. Together with hiking often on open roads or farmlands, we were quickly parched and exhausted. By the end of the day, despite frequent application of sunscreen, both Rob and Pete were sporting sunburnt legs.

Apart from a lot of road walking and some steep inclines, we made good progress despite the heat and have today completed the last half of section 4 and all of section 5 in the guidebook. (The GR10 guide breaks the trail into suggested traverses for each day of the hike.)

Since Pete’s burn is really painful, we have opted to stay in a motel tonight and hope the rest will be healing for him. Rob and I are now in the centre of the town (St Jean Pied de Port) sitting at a restaurant waiting for our food. We have been to the supermarket to buy some food for tomorrow’s lunch and done our laundry at a 24-hour laundromat.

We both hope to sleep well despite our sore feet, legs and shoulders!
