Last day on the trail
July 20, 2024
As promised, we had rain overnight, but it stopped in the early hours, allowing us to pack up and get going in the misty morning. Down on the cliffs by the ocean, despite the heavy fog, we could see a long strip of beautiful beach with wild seas and surf crashing in. The path took us down to Loe Bar Beach, where there were signs warning us to not swim under any circumstances due to strong undercurrents.
Then it was back up, eventually to a road winding through the pretty town of Porthleven. Here, the rain started and we were able to catch the bus to Penzance, ending our coastal path journey. (Originally, we planned to keep hiking on the coastal path to Penzance, but with considerable rain forecast for the day, we opted for the bus.)
Accommodation in Penzance was pretty limited as it is the start of the British school holidays. We managed to find a reasonably priced guest house but it was a minimum 3 night stay. This will give us time to rest up after the 200km of hiking we have done in the last six and a bit days. We have enjoyed this section of the South West Coast Path, but as we don’t have enough time to finish the whole path, we have decided to stop at this southerly point, and try to organise a change of air ticket back to Australia.

Congrats on all those leagues legged !
It will be great to see you and hear all about it.
congratulations
Wow! What beautiful photos and lots more kms. I’ve loved looking at the scenery and hearing your experiences as I’m now reading Raynor Winn’s second book ‘The Wild Silence’ after reading ‘The Salt Path’ , both of which are set in that area. I did visit some of those villages with my cousin many years ago and they look the same, bringing back pleasant memories . Thank you for sharing the incredible experiences you have had. Safe travels back to Oz.
Robert and Ros, I have only just seen your beautiful photos and read the exciting trip as usual. Thank you so much for sharing, yes every trip has there adventures. Hoping that Robert leg is ok and that Peter’s leg is also ok.
Sending lots of love to you all xxoo
