Today we had just a short 6 mile hike into town. Walking along an easy path in the cool morning was really lovely and we arrived back at the motel at 8.45 in good spirits. Since check-in was not til 1 pm, we relaxed at a McDonalds restaurant and had interesting conversations with a couple of other travellers. Later, back at the Econolodge, we met Heatshield, Russell, and some other hikers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heatshield told us the story behind his trail name. A few days ago as he was hiking the first section in the very hot desert, he met another hiker who looked to be very unwell. This young man was severely dehydrated and vomiting, unable to keep even small amounts of fluid down. Heat shield was able to assist him by cooling his chest with water, and staying 2 hours with him to check he was OK. The young man made it safely to the next town in a ride up the highway which fortunately intersected the trail nearby. Hence our friend’s trail name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our town chores – eating town food, sorting our resupply, showering, cleaning utensils, and doing laundry – are all complete, and we will head off around 6 am to start the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
