Into Grants
June 1, 2025
‘Red line’ mile marker 502.3 to 523.1
Hiked today: 20.8 miles / 33.5 km

Last night, when we reviewed our progress, we discovered that we were only 21 miles out of our next town, Grants, New Mexico. It was easily possible in a day if we got going early and didn’t drag our feet. We were started before 6 and were rewarded with a view of some elk near the road soon after starting. All through to the intersection with the interstate, we were walking beside the massive lava flow.

We only had a few stops in the morning and had completed 15 miles to the interstate by noon. (It was also our fourth “tenner” in a row – where we complete at least 10 miles by 10am). On our map app, there was a pin saying “Subway and I40”. We assumed it meant that there was a subway to get under the I40 Interstate, but it turned out to be an actual Subway sandwich shop!

With good appetites, we managed to share a footlong and Rob still had room for another 6 inch sub while I enjoyed some crisps and we both had plenty of ice cold soft drink. While relaxing in the AC we have booked a motel ahead in Grants for 2 nights, tomorrow will be a zero for us – resting, no hiking.
As we walked the final 6 miles into Grants, we crossed paths with Scoop, who was starting the section we had just completed because he missed it earlier due to injury. We wondered what happened to him later as we got completely drenched by a thunderstorm with hail just as we reached Grants.
Now in the motel we are relaxing after a hot shower.

Also in Grants and will be here until I hike out Tuesday morning if you’ll be in town tomorrow!
We are taking a zero tomorrow, staying at Southwest Motel. Will be visiting Walmart tomorrow.
Well done guys! More big days!
The sunrise elk photos are beautiful!!
Great going guys, glad the subway turned out to be a real sandwich store!!
Fantastic effort Rob and Ros. The photos of sunrises are superb. You are collecting some great ones for your next book. It’s getting cooler here now that it’s winter and we are thoroughly enjoying it.
