Day 11: Down from the Mountain
Day 11: April 4, 2023
AZT mile 150.5 to 167.0
Hiked today: 16.5 miles / 26.6 km
AZT hiked to date: 20.9%
The cool breeze that started yesterday had increased to a strong wind by the evening and wind gusts continued through the night and on through the day today. The icy wind had us moving swiftly as soon as we were all packed up. We skidded and rolled down the rocky rubble on the steep descent down the mountain and then the trail flattened out and wound through grassy savannah and then up and down and around the foothills. Despite all the turns we were unable to escape the wind which followed us all day.
The last 4 miles after lunch took us on a quite steep climb and at the hilltop we were able to look back to Mica Mountain where we had woken this morning.
Then after another mile we were on the side of a highway and hitching a ride into Tucson.
Only 3 cars passed before a friendly young couple stopped and squeezed all 3 of us with our gear into their small hatchback and took us all the way to the REI store in Tucson. We are booked into a motel and have showered, eaten dinner and washed our clothes which are now in the dryer. Tomorrow, we will do our shopping and posting and hopefully have time for putting our feet up and resting.

Great work! Good to chat on the phone earlier. Rest up!
Wonderful to get clean and sorted and tucking into good food in Tucson – congratulations!
