It was cool but not cold and we woke refreshed. Initially the trail was a tangle of roots and rocks but as we moved into deciduous forest the track became smoother. We met another couple who are section hiking- having completed a thruhike in 2015. Their trail names are Little Bear and Atlas. We saw them again in the afternoon up in the Roan Mtn foothills. They were hoping to summit and move down from there before nightfall.
