Nantahala Outdoor Centre

Day 11: April 8, 2022
AT mile 125.4 to 136.9
Hiked: 11.5 miles / 18.5 km
AT miles hiked to date: 6.2%

Well, we told you it was cold yesterday afternoon.  As we settled down to an early night’s sleep we heard what at first we thought was leaves falling on our tent. We soon realised it was a brief flurry of snow! It didn’t last long but the night remained cold.

Another firetower, another view

This morning we walked fast to try and warm up. After a few hours we were walking along a ridge top when it started snowing again, accompanied by cold winds.

As we descended to the Nantahala Outdoor Centre the snow became light rain. In view of the forecast snow we had booked a night here. While we waited for 3pm to check-in, we made a beeline for the restaurant for a hot meal.

We now hear that tomorrow will also bring snow with the threat of snow storms above 3500 feet elevation so we have decided to stay here a 2nd night. With clean clothes and bodies and full stomachs we will enjoy the break before the next stage of our hike.

Another cold day

I’m glad you were able to find shelter from the storm. I’m enjoying your photos. Hopefully true spring weather is just around the corner. Stay warm.
