200 mile highpoint

April 15, 2022 Uncategorized 2 Comments

Day 17: April 14, 2022
AT mile 197.2 to 207.7
Hiked: 10.5 miles / 16.9 km
AT miles hiked to date: 9.5%

It rained during the night but we were able to break camp while it was just dripping from the trees. Talking of trees, everything is springing into life, with new buds and flowers.

A steep climb up for 3 miles brought us to the top of Clingman’s Dome which at 6612′ is the highest point on the whole AT. There is a fancy concrete lookout tower for tourists. The view is amazing (we are told).

At the same time we reached our 200 mile mark.

7 miles later we reached Newfound Gap which is on the North Carolina/Tennessee border.

Then with fellow thruhiker Mosey we hitched 15 miles into Gatlinburg and booked into a nice motel for the night. Then it was laundry and out for some dinner and resupply shopping. Gatlinburg is a strange town, full of amusement parlours and side shows and rides etc.

Nothing but blue skies

Must be cool walking through such an obvious seasonal change

I loved Gatlinburg when I visited there about 10 years ago! Such a quirky cute town with crazy stuff to see!
I am enjoying your hike. 😀
