Day 5: Tray Mountain
April 2, 2022
AT mile 49.1 to 65.6
Hiked: 16.8 miles / 27.0 km
AT miles hiked to date: 65.6
Tray Mountain is just one of a number of steep ascents we made today. Although we climbed to much higher altitudes on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, we are told, discards the switchbacks and instead takes you directly up to the top of each peak We have noticed, however, that whereas the PCT took us up and then back down each mountainside, the AT tends to keep us high and we have enjoyed lots of ridge walking so far.
Although we are walking through forest, there is very little green at this time of year. We have been told that first the leaf buds appear, then the bugs and then will come the birds and other animal life.
Our camp tonight is at Deep Gap Shelter. The guys in the tent next to ours have solved the cold nights problem – a tent with a little wood burning stove and a chimney. Obviously they are not thru hiking to Maine!

Wow, I think a wood burning stove is a great idea! Gary would never carry it though. Love the photos!
Fabulous idea , but a bit dodgy maybe . Have to cool it before packing , and gather fuel . Loving the spring blooms
