Day 2: our longest day yet

AT mile 2.8 to 17.0
Hiked today: 14.2 miles / 22.9 km
AT miles hiked to date: 17.0

We were pleased with our progress today. At 23km it is our longest day yet, which is not hard if you are on day 2!

Overcast, and almost a view

The morning was overcast and quite cool and Ros slept in after having very broken sleep due to her internal clock not having reset yet. We set off at around 8.30 and soon after our start came across a short detour that took us to Long Creek Falls.

This afternoon turned sunny and was mostly downhill along a well graded and nicely maintained track. Our target was Gooch Mtn Shelter but we arrived mid afternoon so did another mile to Gooch Gap. Along the way so far we have met a lot of other thruhikers but so far no others from outside America. It is spring here so we are seeing some early blooms along the path but the trees are mostly still bare of leaves.

A thunderstorm is predicted for 11pm tonight. Hopefully it won’t rain for long into the morning.
