Day 1 –
Day 1 – March 29, 2022
AT mile 0 to 2.8
AT miles hiked to date: 2.8
We are finally on the AT!
But first an update on the lead up. We had a good flight over – in fact so good we were 30 minutes ahead of schedule. But then we had to sit in the plane waiting for the airport to “open” at 6am. As a consequence the immigration queues were quite short and we got through quickly, and most importantly, we’re given 6 month visas.
Another 4 hour flight from Los Angeles saw us in Atlanta, then we took the local metro out to a hotel. We still feel a bit jet-lagged.
Yesterday was spent shopping for food and gear and an American SIM. Then this morning we got an Uber to a post office to post some resupply boxes up the line, followed by another Uber out to Amicalola Falls, where the Approach Trail starts.
After a briefing and advice from rangers, and the obligatory photo under the stone arch, we started the 8.5 mile approach trail past the falls and leading quite steeply to the top of Springer Mountain, where there are couple of brass plaques and the first of many white blazes marking the AT.
Another 3 miles brought us to Stover Creek shelter where we have pitched our tent, cooked dinner and set ourselves up for the night. The weather today has been perfect for hiking and we are very glad to be back on the trail.
